Wooden Religious Carvings
Thought Bites
-Used all kinds of different looking wood
-In the carvings, used extraordinary detail.
-All religious
-All seemed to tell a story
Expansion:
I thought that this exhibit was extremely interesting. I am not usually a fan of religious artwork, but I thought that this exhibit was an interesting and different way of doing traditional religious artwork. One thing that I found interesting was that all the wood panels looked different. I could not tell weather each panel was used with a different piece of wood or there was a different type of stain. This gave each piece a different look and made it interesting. The artist also used extraordinary details in the wooden artworks. He included everything from eyes to stands of hair. All the pieces were religious so they were all based on religious stories. Some of the characters in them were Mary, Jesus, and several angels.

Fireworks of Glass
Dale Chihuly
Thought Bites:
- Glass artwork
- Colorful
- Mostly different shapes found in nature
- Detailed
Expansion of Thought Bites:
Over winter break, I visited Indiana, and went to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. There was an interesting exhibit about Dale Chihuly’s glass that he made. All of his glass that he made was colorful. There were many varieties of colors, most of them very vibrant. The whole exhibit was done on the ceiling of the room, which made the exhibit really interesting looking. All the glass was in different shapes including different sea animals such as starfish, different kinds of shells, as well as seahorses. When looking up at the glass, it makes you feel like you are in the ocean. Each piece of glass was 3-D and very detailed. You could see every bump in the starfish as well as every dent in the shells. One of my favorite objects in his exhibit was the large “Christmas tree” of glass tubes. This structure was about 4 stories tall and located in the museum. It was made of all different color glass tubes banded together. It was very interesting to look at.
Nation Portfolio Day Reflection: 11/22/2009
For Portfolio, we were assigned to go down to the Constitution Center in Philadelphia for National Portfolio Day. In my opinion, the day was very interesting. When first arriving, it was easy to get lost. My goal for the national portfolio day was to visit schools that had an architecture program, because that is what I plan to major in college. Because of the long lines at Penn State and Drexel, I got my dad to wait in those lines, while I visited schools with shorter lines.
The first school that I visited was Lawrence Tech University. He was able to give me a lot of information about the architecture program at their school as well as gave me of pamphlets about architecture and student work. I found out that they only offer a four year degree in architecture, unlike the other schools that I am looking at who offer a five year degree. Despite this, they do offer a masters program to be completed after the four years. For their school or architecture, they do not require a portfolio. He did tell me though that one important part of architecture is to be comfortable with the concept of space and depth.
Next door to Lawrence Tech University, I visited California College of the Arts. I was not able to get a lot of information about the architecture program because they did not have any panthlets to give out because according to the spokes lady, they had been lost in the mail. But, I did fond out that they offer a four year degree in architecture. I did show her some of my work though. I showed her some of my text pieces, as well as some observation sketches. She really like the text paintings and convinced me to include them into my portfolio, as well as continue doing them. She liked my observation sketches. But, she told me to do more with them. One of her suggestions was to do more bold observations using chalk and or charcoal. She also said to varry the size of them. She also suggested to use different types of paper and to vary from objects to buildings to people.
Because of the long lines at the other colleges that I wanted to visit, I was only able to pick up Drexel’s and Penn State’s panthlets about architecture. Drexel needs a portfolio, but they only require 5 pieces that must be sent through a website.

Contemporary Photography
Thought Bites:
- Black and white
- Nature
-Photographs of different countries
Expansion:
The Contemporary Photography was/is an exhibit in the Woodmere Art Museum. In this exhibit, several photographers show their photographs. Many of the photographs are in black and white. Each has its individual characteristics. Depending on the artist, the viewer can differentiate which artist did with photograph. Throughout the exhibit, there is also of scenery photographs. Some of them focus on one item, like a house or villa. Daniel Traub photographed an abandoned villa. For some reason, this was probably the most moving piece in the exhibit. Even though it was extremely simple, it showed depth and meaning to me. There were also many photographs that were photographed out of the United States. Daniel Traub also did a series of photographs that were located in Shang Hai. They portrayed regular people that lived in Shang Hai and showed their daily lives. These pieces were/are also very moving to me.

Exhibit Name: Recent Acquisitions
At: Woodmere Art Museum
Thought Bites:
- Oil on canvas/canvas board
- Flower
- Scenery
- Still Lives
- Abstract
- Real life
Expansion:
In this small art exhibit, new artists/local artist exhibited their work. What i noticed from looking at the art, was that all the artwork was on canvas or canvas board. They were also all made with oil paint. It is interesting too see all the different techniques and styles used by these artists when all of them used the same materials to produce their art. Many of the artists whose art was exhibited in the art gallery had art that displayed flowers and scenery. They all had different styles and one would be able to tell that they were done by different artists. Artists also portrayed scenery and still life’s. Many were of fruit. In the exhibit, there was also realistic paintings. One of these realistic paintings was from John Lear. The artwork was called “Bus Stop”. It was of a man standing at a bus stop in the rain. What was interesting about this piece of artwork was that is stood out from the others. The other paintings seemed happy and colorful, while this one was in darker colors, mostly neutral. It gave out more of a depressing vibe than the other paintings in the gallery.
